Volunteering at VAC

VACVoluntary Action Calderdale have some new and exciting volunteering opportunities. We are developing volunteering roles to improve the lives of Calderdale residents and to improve health and care services in the district. Our diverse range of roles will suit people from a variety of different backgrounds, who have different skills and time commitments.

We are currently recruiting new volunteers and offering training in the coming months.

Volunteering is a fantastic way to meet new people, learn new skills and make a real difference in your local community. Voluntary Action Calderdale is committed to creating a fairer society and these volunteering roles are an opportunity for people to join with us in fulfilling this aim.

VAC is training volunteers to mystery shop health and social care services in Calderdale. A variety of methods will be used including visits, reading websites and making telephone calls, to check the quality of the services and to gather feedback of people’s experiences of the services.

Weekend Care provides a safe and social environment for Calderdale residents 50+. A team of trained volunteers provide hot and nutritious meals to people in a friendly and attentive environment. Weekend Care improves the lives of Calderdale residents and their health and wellbeing by providing a social and stimulating environment for people to be in.

Do you want to make a difference to people’s lives?

Ways to get involved:

  • Befriender – attend Weekend Care sessions, chat to service users, assist serving food,cleaning up and helping with activities.
    Timings: 10 – 4pm on Friday, Saturday or Sunday
  • Cook – help prepare a two course meal, including planning the menu and shopping.
    Timings: 9:30 – 1pm on Saturday or Sunday
  • Driver – collect and return service users. Drivers would need their own car, a clean driving licence and appropriate insurance. Out of pocket expenses will be paid. Timings: Saturday and Sunday 8:30 – 10:30am & 3 – 5pm (Some flexibility will be required)
  • Passenger Assistant – to assist drivers collecting and returning service users.
    Timings: Saturday and Sunday 8:30 – 10:30am & 3 – 5pm (Some flexibility will be required)

VAC is partnering with several residential care homes to provide an activity programme for their residents. Creative and meaningful activities will be delivered in the homes by community groups and volunteers with particular skills or interests. The project will be supported by volunteers from communities close to each of the residential homes.

Ways to get involved:

Companion – to act as a befriender at the residential care home, to accompany residents to activities outside of the care home, to take residents for walks in the local area and attend activities at the care home, particularly supporting those residents who do not have family members.

Timings – flexible – activities will take place every day

Activity Supporter – to support sessions and engage residents in the activities. Sessions will be delivered by voluntary and community groups and may include pet therapy, creative arts, music or other group activities. There will also be opportunity to do one to one support doing activities such as reading, playing cards or using memory books.

Timings – flexible – activities will take place every day

Driver – to drive residents to activities in the local area and also on day trips to locations further away. Being able to drive a minibus would be ideal but is not essential.

Timings – flexible – activities will take place every day

Volunteers will not undertake personal care activities or those duties of paid care/support staff.
